Description of Linux-Hardware-Guide Tools

The Linux-Hardware-Guide Tools are a set of programs that help you connect your Linux system (PC, Laptop, HTPC, …) with the Linux-Hardware-Guide knowledge base. It monitors your Linux hardware and automatically submits the hardware data to the Linux-Hardware-Guide database, if new components are recognized. Furthermore, it helps you to identify your hardware and shows you the related hardware configuration descriptions. It is an easy way to help us collect hardware information and lets you share your hardware experience with other users.

Use LHG Connector to access your scan results

Ubuntu Installation – Package Manager

For Ubuntu users we highly recommend using the package manager to install the software. This way, updates of the tools are automatically installed.
1) Add the repository to your Ubuntu system:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linux-hardware-guide/ppa
sudo apt-get update

2) Install the package:

sudo apt-get install linux-hardware-guide

The first hardware scan is executed automatically.

3) To see your scan results use the “LHG Connector” program


It will bring you to the web page where you can browse, comment, rate and edit your hardware results.

Hardware Scan without installation

It is possible to execute the hardware scan without permanently installing any software on your system. This should work on most Linux systems:

perl <(wget -q -O -)

However, you need wget and libwww-perl installed for this to work. This can be achieved under Ubuntu by the command “sudo apt-get install libwww-perl wget”.
